The first destination found on this route is Pavia, the “city of a hundred towers” Full of rich Lombardian history, Pavia was the Ancient capital of the Lombard kingdom, and since the middle Ages the University of Pavia is seen as one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. Pavia was the favorite seat of the influential and refined court of Visconti Lordship that made the cityone of the greatest attractions of Renaissance artistic patronage.
The picturesque alleys of the old town, the majesty of the Visconti Castle, the University Cloisters full of rich culture and history are just a few of the things that catch the eye of many. Just a short distance from the historic center you can admire the splendid Romanesque Early Christian Basilica of San Pietro in Ciel d’Oro. It was here under the marble Ark where the remains of St. Augustine were kept.San Pietro was a masterpiece of Romanesque Lombard, as well as the Basilica of St. Michael, where the coronation of Emperors took place. Since the middle age, the Broletto Palace was the seat of the Municipality and the place where the first town assembly took place.
TheBasilica of San Teodoro is an important church settled in one of the oldest parts of the city. This church was dedicated to the Patron Saint of fishermen, boatmen and traders.
The Covered Bridge, an ancient city gate, enables you to reach Borgo Ticino, a small and picturesque medieval neighborhood characterized by small old houses of the fishermen who are within walking distance of the riverbank. Once you have reached the ancient door on the embankment, which allows the entrance of theBorgo Ticino, you become immersed in the green of the Ticino Natural Park.
